งานวิจัยนี้ศึกษาปรากฏการณ์ที่เรียกว่า "ประวัติศาสตร์หวนคืน (Historical Recurrence)" โดยเฉพาะในแง่ของการกลับมาของระบบจักรวรรดินิยมและโครงสร้างอำนาจแบบขุนนาง (Aristocratic Power Structure) ที่เคยรุ่งเรืองเมื่อพันปีก่อน แต่มาปรากฏใหม่ภายใต้บริบทของระบบทุนนิยมยุคปัจจุบัน ที่อำนาจและโอกาสถูกผูกขาดโดยกลุ่มทุนใหญ่และเครือข่ายชนชั้นสูงสมัยใหม่ผ่านการเชื่อมโยงทางเครือข่ายเส้นสาย (Cronyism) และอภิสิทธิ์ทางโอกาส (Privileged Opportunities) ส่งผลให้บัณฑิตและผู้มีความสามารถที่ขาดเครือข่ายทางสังคม ไม่มีโอกาสแสดงศักยภาพของตนได้อย่างเต็มที่
